Kanpur, Oct.4 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters conducted mock wedding of Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal with television actress Rakhi Sawant in Kanpur on Thursday over his ‘sexist’ remarks.
Addressing a soiree of poets, Jaiswal had remarked that victory and women are alike, both lose charm with the passage of time.
He had said this while asking the participants at the event to hail the victory of Indian cricket team over Pakistan in the Super Eight stage match of ICC World T20 tourney in Sri Lanka.
This off-the-cuff remark drew ire of women organisations, which branded it as ‘sexist’ and demanded Jaiswal must apologise.
On his part, Jaiswal contended that he had been quoted out of context.
Meanwhile, Lakshya, a forum dedicated to issues concerning women filed the petition against Jaisal in the court of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) at Kanpur.
The president of the women’s wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Kanpur, Pramila Pandey, described Jaiswal as narrow minded.
Akhilesh Bajpai, a BJP supporter, said that through these demonstrations, we want to showcase his low mentality.
"Neither am I a groomsman nor am I dancing, but the youth wing of Bharatiya Janata Party is demonstrating against the views expressed by him by conducting this. The mentality of the coal minister is very low," said Bajpai.
Meanwhile, women belonging to BJP took to the streets in Shimla and raised slogans against Jaiswal and demanded his resignation from the cabinet.
Agitated by the comments, a protester, Vibhuti Dhadwal demanded an apology from Jaiswal.
"I just want to say that the way these people comment before the camera and media, the same way they should apologise to women and people in front of the camera," said Dhadwal.
Jaiswal is reported to have prompted the audience at the soiree to celebrate the Indian team’s win over Pakistan sans any delay and compared victory with a new marriage, saying there is no fun left when the two get old.(ANI)
